Bhagavatham - Chapter 10 - Killing of Pralambasura and
Devouring the forest fire
A demon called
Pralambasura was also sent by Kamsa to kill Krishna. While
Krishna and his friends were playing one day, this demon
also joined them in the form a young boy. The boys divided
themselves into two teams and Krishna was the captain of one
team and his brother Balarama for the other. The losing side
had to carry the winners on their back. Pralambasura was on
the losing side and was asked to carry Balarama. While doing
this he started running away with Balarama on his back. As
soon as Balarama realized the danger, he smashed
Pralambasura' s head and killed him. It must be remembered
that Balarama was one of the plenary portions of the supreme
lord and had immense strength.
Krishna was
brought up by Nand and his clan who were cowherds. One day
while he along with his friends were in charge of grazing of
the cattle, the cows in their anxiety for fresh grass began
to wander and entered a nearby forest. Krishna and other
cowherd boys lost track of them. Soon a forest fire broke
out and the cows were in great danger of being burnt alive.
Krishna and other boys located the cows by following the
hoof prints. They found the cows, but were soon surrounded
by the fire. The heat and smoke became unbearable and some
of them fainted. The cowherd boys had immense faith in
Krishna and appealed to him. Krishna swallowed the whole
fire and saved both the boys and the cows. Throughout the
Vedas, the importance of faith in God is stressed upon. The
cowherd boys are the example often quoted by Vedic scholars
on their unshakable faith in Krishna though he also appeared
as a boy amongst them.
